Things I Made and Saw: Art, Yarn Bombing and Culture a'Plenty

This weekend there were a lot of different exhibits and things happening as a part of Culture Days, which is a weekend devoted to celebrating arts and culture across all of Canada. Pretty neat, right?

On Friday, I went to an GuelPhonography exhibit at the Guelph Civic Museum, which was an exhibit where the photos were taken by amateur mobile photographers (Instagram and beyond)  from Guelph, and the top 30 photos were chosen to be printed off onto different mediums (wood, metal, canvas, fabric etc) and displayed at the museum. Some of my friends were organizers, and well as in the top 30 photos, so it was great to get to see a bunch of them all in one place. The exhibit was fabulous, and I'm definitely putting some cool prints on different materials like this onto the ever-growing wishlist in my head. You can also see all the entries on the GuelPhonography site for those of you who can't be there in person.

This one wasn't part of the exhibit, but was one of the sample pictures that the printing event sponsor uses to show some of the neat ways they can print photos. Pretty cool, right? It was a fun exhibit, and I enjoyed nibbling on cheese and olives and tasty things, seeing some friends and heading out to the after party for drinks. Although, in retrospect, I probably shouldn't have sat out on the balcony in freezing temperatures without a sweater when I was just getting over a cold, as the sniffles are back in full force.

Despite the sniffles, I also checked out some of the Graffiti fest that was going on on Saturday --there were 30 or so graffiti arts at work on big boards, and a few public boards where you could write or paint things. There were also some artists at work on a huge wall mural of adorable monsters on the wall of one of the awesome coffee shops downtown, the Joint. I also got to have tea and a catch-up with some old friends, which definitely made my day!

Also, since I love yarn bombing, I took a bunch of pictures of the yarn bombing that happened in the square. I hope this last for awhile since it will make my walk to work that much more fun and cheerful!

  1. The yarn bombing looks great! Perfect for Guelph. I hope it stays up long enough for me to see it - I'll be in Gueslph for a union strike vote on Wednesday! (Not the happiest reason for a visit, to be sure!)

    1. I think they're keeping it up for a month, so should be enough time. Boo to bad reasons for popping into town, but at least you'll get to see the yarn bombing :)
