Diggin' up my Roots - Bulgarian Embroidery

A recent assignment at school on cultural traditions and usefulness in social work group practice has sort of stirred up my head in thinking about my family and the traditions that they've had in the past, but not necessarily passed on. My great grandmother emigrated to Canada from Bulgaria, and if not for her, I never would have known about traditional Bulgarian embroidery. I'll share more about her story later, but wanted to show you a few images that exemplify what Bulgarian embroidery looks like in case you've never seen it! Overall, I love the geometric shapes, patterns and colours in it so much! I actually have a collection of pieces that my great grandma embroidered herself, which I'll be gathering up and taking photos of soon to go along with some of the family history, as well as what I learn about the history of embroidery in Bulgaria.

And I have to throw in this picture, just because it made me howl with laughter the first time I saw it

  1. How beautiful! I have to admit, while I can embroider, it's not my craft of choice. Maybe if I had beautiful embroidery like this in my heritage, I'd feel more connected to it. Sounds like a fun assignment and now I'm fascinated by your great-grandmother!

  2. @Ada Yeah I'm about the same-- I can embroider, but don't really. However, wanting to learn more of the stitches and that used traditionally, and see how I can adapt them to stuff I like to do! Feeling excited by it:) And will get on taking those pics of the stuff I have of my great grandma's soon:)
