I really enjoy all of the ideas that are presented each year in the Aviva Community Fund contest, and this year is no exception. The contest brings out the most brilliant and necessary ideas out of the woodwork in an interactive way that lets us at home see what worthwhile ideas community groups are championing for their local communities. I think I feel particularly connected to this contest this year, maybe because I'm doing my placement for school in a community based organization where partnerships and funding are really important. but I can also see the impact this contest has had on helping community ideas and projects to come to pass. This year I really want to focus on a few of the awesome ideas that have sprung up around me without my knowldge until this second round of the contest..
For starters, a local food pantry is recognizing the increase in families in poverty and the lack of knowledge and are proposing the set up of an "edu-kitchen" with their idea,,where families can prepare and learn to cook tasty and nutritious meals, while boosting their confidence in their cooking skills. I think this is a great idea, and the use of a point system for their food pantry ( instead of the usual way of giving out set food hampers) is a truly innovative idea. And this is just one of the many awesome ideas out there that are focusing on improving our communities and the lives of it's members. Others ideas from my community include a proposal for a no kill sanctuary for domestic rabbits, the expansion of programming for a local organization with a focus on individuals with intellectual disabilities and an idea to support the pilot of a program to match seniors in need of companionship with pets in need of foster care.
